Rampaging gunmen have burnt down the Divisional Police Headquarters in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The unfortunate incident, which occurred in the wee hours of Wednesday, has caused palpable tension in the community.

News Band Newspaper gathered that the ragtag gunmen in their large number invaded the police station and started shooting sporadically, scaring police officers on duty away, before setting the building ablaze.

At the time of filing this report, casualty figures have not yet been established but it was gathered that the fire destroyed the building, property, and official documents.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement.

He said, “Our operatives in the early hours of today 28/12/2022 engaged some gunmen who attacked Ihiala police divisional headquarters and recovers one abandoned Ak47 rifle. The gunmen escaped the scene due to the superior fire of the police operatives, and no casualty was recorded.

“Unfortunately, the explosives the gunmen threw inside the police station building had already ignited a fire and affected the building.

“Operation is still ongoing in the area, further details shall be communicated.”

Since 2021, Anambra State has become a safe haven for criminal elements masquerading as agitators.

Meanwhile, despite repeated promise of Soludo’s administration to arrest the security situation, last week Friday, gunmen also went berserk, abducted the Managing Director of People’s Bookshop, Pius Egwuekwe, from his home at Umuchu Community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. The businessman was said to have returned from Zaria to celebrate Christmas when the underworld men striked.

Though, his abductors are yet to establish any form communication with the family.

While a young man, identified as Mr Ifeanyi was also abducted at Okpuno in Awka South Local Government Area two days to Christmas by some suspected gunmen and his body dumped by the roadside.
